One of our favorite past times during winter is using our handheld looms and making potholders. My ten year old loves making them- selling and giving them as gifts. My thirteen year old also likes them. They each like different parts of the process. Their loom is 7” and my loom is 10”.

Time Commitment: 30 minutes

Materials Needed:

• pot holder loom
• pot holder loops
• crochet hook (9 mm)
• wooden macramé rings

These looms have instructions with them! My XL loom is handmade off of Etsy (a Christmas gift from Sweet Husband a few years back). The kids use Daddy’s old metal loom- perfect and sturdy. You can find beautiful patterns also. My sons have enjoyed sorting their colors into piles and deciding which kind of pot holder to make next!

We like to use a crochet hook to finish off each pot holder (again- info should be included in the instructions). For each pot holder, we add a wooden macramé ring. For the 7” ones, we use small; for the 10” ones, we use large ones.

Here are some I made last winter, all complete. The loops we use are from different places. My sons have gotten loops from Hobby Lobby- multi, fall, and pastel colors are all available. I have gotten mine off of Amazon. There are different sizes, so be careful! I like the fact that you can get bags of solid colors.

Funny boy! We like to add tags that say ‘handmade for you’ when we gift them. If you look on Etsy, you’ll see how much these beauties cost from sellers if you purchase them. But, if you make them, they make beautiful gifts! Add a loaf of homemade bread and a wooden spoon and you’ll have a lovely set. The smaller size can make a perfect mug rug, too! Have your kids weave some for relatives. Add a mug and some homemade cocoa. Delish and super sweet handmade gift!
