    KEEPING CHICKENS

Here is a follow up post regarding raising laying hens! I hope it helps you on the road to becoming a Chicken Keeper! Keeping laying hens is not difficult! It does require time and effort though, and, I would add, a bit of forethought. But keeping things cleaned; giving them…

  • MEAL IDEAS- What’s For Lunch?

Confession- sometimes I get tired of cooking. Sometimes I want ideas for what to make. Sometimes I need a reboost to get the juices flowing on what to fix for my family. As I have mentioned, unless it is farming season, I make two meals per day for us to…

    BABY CHICKS

When I was planning out our spring on the homestead for ‘when to get what chick when‘, I decided to raise our meat chickens in the vacant coop (see previous post!) and get our layers a bit later to stagger their growth. Last weekend, we took a trip about 35…

    WINDOWS & A WREN

Isn’t it amazing how something small can change the look of a room? I love my vintage, lacy curtains. But, I decided I would like a wee change. So, the kids helped me take them down. I cleaned the counters around them and washed those tall windows. Our home faces…

    GARDEN UPDATE- early May

This year I decided to try adding a layer of compost to my entire area of the garden. We garden an approximate 30×32 area. I found some organic beef cattle manure compost, garden ready (which means it has overwintered and broken down). My Sweet Husband asked if there was a…

    TODAY- April Edition

These beautiful spring days are always some of my favorite! Cool, fragrant breezes. Delicious rains. Or sunshine that’s tantalizing from inside the kitchen window. On this particular April day, I found myself knee deep in sourdough baking, along with other kitchen and homesteading endeavors! 8:27 a.m. I made some sourdough…

  • HOMEMADE- Raw Sauerkraut

If someone were to ask you your favorite vegetable, what would it be? And, yes, you have to pick a favorite. 🙂 Would that choice be raw? Steamed? Roasted? Covered in cheese? If you ask my six year old, she would tell you that her favorite is raw sauerkraut! What?!…

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
