    GARDEN UPDATE- early May

This year I decided to try adding a layer of compost to my entire area of the garden. We garden an approximate 30×32 area. I found some organic beef cattle manure compost, garden ready (which means it has overwintered and broken down). My Sweet Husband asked if there was a…

    TODAY- April Edition

These beautiful spring days are always some of my favorite! Cool, fragrant breezes. Delicious rains. Or sunshine that’s tantalizing from inside the kitchen window. On this particular April day, I found myself knee deep in sourdough baking, along with other kitchen and homesteading endeavors! 8:27 a.m. I made some sourdough…

  • HOMEMADE- Raw Sauerkraut

If someone were to ask you your favorite vegetable, what would it be? And, yes, you have to pick a favorite. 🙂 Would that choice be raw? Steamed? Roasted? Covered in cheese? If you ask my six year old, she would tell you that her favorite is raw sauerkraut! What?!…

    APRIL- Challenge III

Is it that time again? Wow! These weeks are passing too quickly. CHALLENGE III: choose one place in (or outside) your home to declutter. I do not generally like trendy words and phrases. But, decluttering is a term we can all understand and, hopefully, get behind. How do I go…

    FOOD PREP DAYS

Some days can fly right by with not as much kitchen time involved. How is this possible in a from-scratch type kitchen? It usually means that you have spent time on another day food prepping! Recently I spent one day getting a lot of different types of foods prepped and…

  • MEAT CHICKENS

    MEAT CHICKENS

When my second son was a baby, we had meat chickens. It was a spur of the moment decision (which we rarely do) in order to help someone have a minimum for butchering (thankfully our processor no longer requires a minimum number of birds). That first experience was so bad,…

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
