Book Review: JULY

Book Review: JULY

This months’ review comes from another church friend. Ashlyn is a young lady with a heart already grounded in Titus 2! She leads by example and shows her joyfilled spirit readily. Let’s meet her!

Aslyn is a sophomore in high school. She enjoys singing, baking/cooking, and hanging out with her friends. She works at the local Dairy Queen in her town and loves to babysit for moms in her area. In her spare time, reading is one of her favorite activities.

Alone Yet Not Alone

‘Alone Yet Not Alone’ is a historical fiction novel based on true events written by Tracy Leininger Craven. It tells a story of a young girl and her sister and how they survive their capture by the Delaware tribe during the Penn Creek Massacre.

Barbara and her sister, Regina, live with their family in Pennsylvania after immigrating from Germany. One day during harvest the girls are captured by Native Americans from the Delaware tribe and are taken as hostages. They cling tightly to each other and their faith as they are dragged along to a village with many other captives. Barbara comforts her sister with these words: “God will always be with us- even in our most difficult trials. The Indians may have taken us away from our home, but they can never take away our faith in Jesus Christ- no matter what happens. Even if something were to happen to me, never forget that God is with you.” Barbara goes on to ask Regina to promise to never lose the song in her heart that their mother taught them: Alone Yet Not Alone. Not long after, the girls are separated and taken to separate tribes. The story follows Barbara and tells her side of living in captivity. She is favored by the Chief’s son and as she grows older she realizes that if she wants to ever live in freedom she must escape. Along with three other captives, she attempts to escape.

I don’t want to say much more just in case you plan to reading the book but I want to end on how this book encouraged me. I don’t face trials that een compare to what the two girls in the story face, but just as the sisters found comfort in that their God was with them even when it seemed that they were alone, I can know that the God who created the universe is always with me, in all seasons of my life!

Just as a fun note- There is a great movie based off of this book and Joni Eareckson Tada has a beautiful version of the song Alone Yet Not Alone.

Thank you, Ashlyn! This book is on my list to read as soon as I can borrow it from the library. How lovely to read such true stories of life lived in devotion to God. Hope everyone enjoys this book review and seeks some new titles for your reading list as summer dwindles.

Happy reading!

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
