I love March! It always has such a different feel than other months. It means robins here in central Illinois; it means my birthday; and it means getting things ‘garden ready’ outside! We can still enjoy cozy evenings indoors, but the sun is shining longer and we are starting to feel the ‘itch’ for spring.

I made some skillet chicken to top salads and put the remainder of the bird in 1/2 gallon of water with ACV and some peppercorns. The crock pot cooks it- then I have broth and cooked chicken, all at once!

Beauty and the mess- always dishes to wash and many blessings to count!

Our seedlings have all sprouted, at least something per variety we planted! I watered them this morning with a fish emulsion fertilizer to give them a boost.

We had a couple of sick days early in the month when my seven year old caught the stomach bug. She didn’t want to look at the book, but she enjoyed hearing it read aloud. And, to top it off, this was a cozy, dark and damp day as well. Perfect for napping… we’d been up most of the night.

I can’t tell you how excited I get when my broth gels. Such nourishment! I made chicken soup one night and turned the leftovers into pot pie the next evening.

One thing that is common around us in the conventional farming world is conservation plots of prairie grasses that are burned off each spring. This is switch grass. The kids wanted to venture in before we burned it.

Sweet Husband helped us revamp our old meat bird brooder. It is approximately 3×6 and can hold about 50 meat chicks for the 3 weeks they’re indoors. After this, they’ve grown their feathers and we move them into the chicken tractor. It needs a revamp as well- more on that later! If you are unfamiliar with this topic, check out my post here!
