TRAVEL- Lincoln Log Cabin

Recently, our family took a field trip day to a favorite spot of ours in Lerna, IL: Lincoln Log Cabin. This is the last home place of Lincoln’s father and family. Come along as we show you the beauty of this out of the way prairie homestead.

The visitor’s center offers a small but well presented museum. There are interactive audio speakers to listen to as you view the artifacts. Many black and white photos show the historic preservation of the farm site. And the children can even play with hands on toys and dress up!

Outside, you can take trails that lead to the old homestead cabins and house. There are two farms that have been brought together to show life from two different perspectives. One farm was once about ten miles west. The homes were moved in and restored. Thomas Lincoln’s cabin, though a reproduction due to the original being lost, is on its actual spot! The website offers information on re-enactors and the times they are on site. My kids love helping them as they prepare the noon day meal.

The farm boasts some animal life and gardens as well. Sheep, pigs, and poultry are happily situated on the two farms. The young lady we spoke to was using fresh garden produce as she made the meal as well as lamb from the site!

Another offering of the museum is a back room with larger artifacts set up. Currently there are looms and woven bed coverings displayed.

This pot holder is for sale in their sweet gift shop. The volunteers make several items to sell in order to benefit the historic site. My family and I always enjoy purchasing gifts here! They have numerous things to offer, including toys, games, and children’s books; food items; stationary and historical books; decor…

If you are your family are looking for a fun new place to visit, check out the Lincoln Log Cabin! Their website gives details and they have a phone number- I would recommend calling before you go if you’re definitely wanting to see re-enactors! Look into this rustic and authentic spot, taking you back to 1845!

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
