TODAY- August Edition

TODAY- August Edition

Isn’t it always the case that we get to this point and say ‘where has the summer gone?’? I’m sure I do that every year. We begin homeschool this week and it’s hard to wrap my mind around that.

August means a lot more preserving and thus, even more dishes! The kids and I harvested quite a lot from the garden this morning and were able to preserve as well as share!

While snapping green beans, the kids and I continued our audio theater of Robin Hood. Only two episodes left! We have loved it. My oldest son and I sorted the cucumbers into sizes. They’ve been beautiful this season! We were able to share all but the largest of these. The big ones went to the hens… those cukes will become eggs shortly. Ha!

Along with preserving (I canned 13 pints of tomato sauce and 2 pints of peppers) I had a gallon of raw milk that needed used quickly. We had gone on a 3 day get away and so we were not home to drink the milk. So, I made a quick and easy Queso Blanco. It is delicious! I put the whey onto my blueberry bushes.

I went out after lunch and cut two bouquets of flowers. The zinnias and sunflowers are lovely this time of summer! And, we’ve seen many pollinators as well as hummingbirds enjoying them.

My Sweet Husband mowed off our potato patch. It was overrun by weeds, unfortunately. Hind sight is always 20/20- but I should’ve kept a better handle on the weeds. I thought the potatoes had grown and were dying back already. Our yield wasn’t great this year. (More on that in an upcoming post!) Notice our bean tunnel! It is nearly all covered and those yields have been excellent.

My six year old had been begging to make muffins. So, while I made supper, she made muffins… I helped. We ended up with 18 banana muffins.

Lunch: egg hash, bacon, yogurt parfaits

Supper: brats, green beans, muffins

What is your August like?

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
