Prince Edward Island Part II- ANNE & LMM STOPS

If you are not an L. M. Montgomery fan, this post will either not be for you or it will make you one. I have loved Anne of Green Gables since I was a girl and have read it several times. The Anne series is 8 books long and in 2022, I finished the series. LMM wrote numerous other novels as well as short stories and magazine articles. She was an idealist, turning her words to make a reader even be able to smell a spicy fern as you walked a path in her books. Here are some of the stops we made on our PEI trip, visiting many Anne and LMM sights. As she was raised on PEI by her grandparents, LMM had many family members who’s homes made debuts in her books.

Birthplace of LMM, New London, PEI- this was the inspiration for Anne’s parents’ little yellow house in Nova Scotia where Anne was born.

Kitchen of birthplace. Note the stove style and Ironstone sugar bowl on the window sill. Both of these items match the same in Green Gables home.

All that is left of the home where LMM lived and grew into adulthood is this foundation. Her cousin actually owned it and, upon the death of her grandmother, LMM was told to leave the house. The cousin let it fall into disrepair.

The building below was actually the kitchen portion of the home and was found, being used as a storage shed I believe. They restored it and moved it to it’s current location. This kitchen was the post office where LMM grandmother, as well as herself, ran the goings-on of mail in Cavendish.

Here is the actually post desk LMM used. Unfortunately, the stamp for the local area was taken by a tourist and never returned.

Green Gables (also first photo) was the home of LMM cousin’s, a brother and sister, whom she frequently visited. She never lived there. This was the house that was made famous in the Anne books as the home of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, brother and sister, who adopted and raised Anne Shirley, the red headed orphan and heroine of the series. I took my handmade doll with me on the trip (again, made for me by my bestie, T) so that she could have her picture made at some of these places as well.

This is one of two pantries in Green Gables. I love looking at each piece and seeing how it would’ve been used. We purchased our tickets and stayed within the property for touring from 9-2. My Sweet Husband told me to do as much as I wanted and I did! I went through Green Gables 3 times.

Here is the Green Gable’s kitchen stove, almost identical to the one at the LMM birthplace.

THIS, for all of you Anne readers, is Anne’s room! As with many books, the movies have changed things. But, this room was decorated to look like the book has it described. On the floor in the foreground, which you can’t see, is a broken slate. ha

This was LMM’s grandfather’s home and is now an Inn. For Anne fans, this is the home that Ingleside was modeled after, although I believe in the books, Ingleside is brick.

This is the home of a distant cousin who still resides in part of the house. This home is the model for Silver Bush in the Pat series.

Inside ‘Silver Bush’ is the fireplace where LMM was married!

This blue chest, also at Silver Bush, hails from “The Story Girl.”

Outside Silver Bush, and on the same property, was The Lake of Shining Waters. There was at least one quoted passage from LMM written in a letter that, even though several places were mentioned by her as inspiration, this is the true Lake of Shining Waters. Not far down the road was the grandfather’s home, close in proximity.

‘New Moon’ from the Emily Series. LMM aunt lived here. Going farther west, we left Silver Bush and I asked Sweet Husband to find this next spot on the map. There were signs marking LMM sites, but this one was off the beaten path. I believe it is privately owned. No one was around and no signs mentioned trespassing, but we just wanted a photo. The view of the ocean was lovely.

Now a restaurant, this train depot was the inspiration for Bright River station in the Anne books, where Matthew Cuthbert finds Anne at the station. We ate at a café across the tracks.

White Sands Hotel from the Kevin Sullivan adaptation. This is Dalvay by the Sea. It is right along the North Shore and, though not pictured, there are now many cottages behind the Inn. Guests can stay here or come for a meal. My sweet sister and her sweet husband wanted to treat me to a special birthday meal somewhere on the island. My Sweet Husband, who was in on the secret, looked around and finally asked me where I’d like to go. We decided it would be too perfect and got reservations! The meal was fabulous- the best we had while traveling.

Looking down from the landing. The inside was beautiful, though not from the movie scenes. The dining room we ate in was off to the right behind the closed double doors.

And finally, though this photo could also go in Part III, I decided to include it here. This is New London lighthouse where, in the movie, Anne and Diana are walking along the shore. Sweet Husband and I got out and walked a bit, but we didn’t venture over to the lighthouse. Once I realized where we were, we had already left- I was so sad I hadn’t explored more.

I hope this article has been enjoyable, even for non-Anne fans. It truly is a wonderful book. I have been doing the audio book with my kiddos this spring/summer and we have loved it. Anne makes for an excellent read aloud for boys and girls and grown ups alike!

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
