HOMEMADE- Smoothies

HOMEMADE- Smoothies

Confession: I don’t usually like smoothies. Also, I have found it hard in the past to know how to make them for my Sweet Husband who loves them. Whew… now that I have told you that, let me say that I have learned how to make smoothies and my family loves them!

It is always a better choice, in my opinion, to make things at home when you can- putting exactly what you want and choose into your foods. For the summer heat, or just any time, that you’d like to add 1) healthy ferments, 2) fruit, 3) personally chosen ingredients into a delicious frozen drink, here is a quick and simple smoothie recipe.

Homemade Smoothie:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2-1 cup plain yogurt (I use homemade)
  • 2 frozen bananas, broken into chunks
  • 5 frozen strawberries (I use organic)

Place ingredients into the blender in above order. Process until well mixed. If the mixture is too thick, add a bit more milk. Pour into cups and serve with fun colored paper straws.

How easy is that?? And, if that wasn’t easy enough, you can take any leftover smoothie from the blender (or make more!) and pour it into popsicle molds for dessert later today! Some people may add 1-2 Tbsp of honey, but the bananas are sweet enough for my crew usually.

Over the years, I have thrown whatever I had on-hand into the blender for a smoothie. But here are a few fun suggestions for other flavors:

  • Tropical: use orange juice instead of milk and pineapple instead of strawberries
  • Berry Medley: add 1/2 cup of frozen organic raspberries/blueberries to the original smoothie
  • PB and Banana: instead of strawberries, add 1/4 cup peanut butter (this is MY favorite… it is more like a milkshake and a good boost of protein)

What kinds of smoothies do you like? Please share with us. And, if you don’t already receive my emails, please subscribe. I generally post 2 new blog articles per week!

Yum! I like to add a handful of spinach to ours for greens! You don’t taste it! We also use very pure whey protein powder if we are just doing fruits and fruit juices to add protein. Peanut butter and banana = yum! 🙂

Yes! Good thoughts! Another awesome source of protein is whey! Whether from yogurt or cheesemaking- that’s a little tang and boost to your smoothie!

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
