TODAY- May Edition

TODAY- May Edition

This ‘day in the life’ is actually over two days. Spring does that to us, doesn’t it? What a joy to put so many lovely things into a day… we just keep it up!

Our peonies are blooming and beautiful right now! (A special thanks to my Sweet Husband’s aunt for these transplants that have grown so lovely!) The smell is intoxicating. My six year old loves picking flowers and so she cut one and brought it in. Sometimes I look at it and it looks like silk or paper! So pretty.

The kiddos and I tried our hand (again) at making butter. I skimmed the cream off of our raw milk and waited until it was near room temperature, but not quite that warm. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my churn to finish it up! After 30 min or so of hand churning, we put it into the blender and finished it. Yum!

For supper that night we had chicken bacon sourdough flatbreads!

They had homemade goat cheese, locally grown bacon, homegrown chicken, and lettuce!

Spring shows so many lovely flowers, dressed in their finest! These lupines we planted after reading Miss Rumphius. I have a seed packet my Sweet Husband got me on our trip to PEI last summer (watch for upcoming summer posts on this trip!) yet to plant.

My lovely Siberian Irises always grow beautifully. I planted an elderberry bush in the bell garden, given to me by a fellow homeschooling mama!

The following day I got three loaves of sourdough made including this gorgeous artisan loaf. Who is so excited?! Me! I was tickled with it.

The kids each had a small piece with jam for snack.

Because my Sweet Husband was rained out of the field, he took a few hours off in the middle of the day and he and the kids took me to our local state park for lunch and a bike ride. Delicious! Happy Mother’s Day!

In the afternoon, the kids and I moved the meat birds’ outdoor food shelter into fresh grass and put some mulch down in the muddy spots. They’re growing fast! They sure like to congregate together.

We were also able to turn the compost and place the old bedding outside the bin (until I use this dark compost that’s almost ready)!

And finally, in the evening, I was able to cut some more peonies for bouquets for myself and my mother-in-law next door before the rain came! Praising God for this beautiful time of year!

If you don’t already get my emails, sign up and receive notices whenever I post! I try to get 2 blog posts out every week. Tell your friends!
Happy May!

How did your goat cheese turn out?? It looks lovely!

My MIL sent some peony buds home with M the other day, and they lasted WEEKS!! It was fun to watch them blossom indoors AND it meant no ants were hiding inside. 🙂

I’m so glad you’re inspired! Rhubarb is a delicious perennial! Yum! And peonies are just lovely. They take a few years to fill out, but it’s worth it. Many times people want to thin theirs and will give them to you. Ask around!

Welcome to
Honey and the Hen!

Currently I don’t have any bees (or honey). We do have meat chickens now – yay!
And we also recently purchased 20 laying pullets. I live with my Sweet Husband and 3 kids in Central Illinois. I love homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling. We are thankful to be saved by grace in Jesus and seek to follow Him and His Word. I am originally from Tennessee and one of six children, using much of my upbringing in what I do and love now. I enjoy learning, growing, and keeping my home with enthusiasm as unto the Lord. We garden and hope to raise more of our own food as we can. Thanks for stopping by!
